1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Greek Word Study

Therapon (θεράπων) → Moses as a servant. Rare word, emphasizing dignity and faithfulness, but still subordinate.

Huios (υἱός) → Jesus as the Son. Not just faithful in the house, but ruling over it.

Oikos (οἶκος) → “House.” In Greek, this means household or community. Moses served in it; Christ rules over it.

Euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον) → “Good news.” Hebrews 4:2 uses this word to describe Israel’s promise of rest. Important to note: the writer himself calls Moses’ message “good news,” but as a foreshadowing.

Breaking it Down

The broader Greek gives us a vivid picture of God passing down “good news” in two distinct ways. First, through Moses—the faithful yet imperfect servant—whose message was a shadow of the Good News to come, a promise of entering God’s rest. Second, through Jesus—the perfect Son, exalted above every created thing—whose message is the fulfillment, offering an even greater rest, which Hebrews will unfold in the verses ahead.

Hebrews reminds us that God’s good news has always been spoken—first in promise, now in fulfillment. The question is whether we will respond in faith and enter the rest He offers through Christ.

Let’s Reflect

What does it mean for you personally that Christ is “over the house” rather than simply “in the house”?

What practical step can you take this week to live as part of God’s household under Christ the Son?
